1. What is the work?
Living-in care is rewarding and valuable work. We choose a client for you who matches your skills and experience. You will live with your client in their own house, making sure they are clean and warm, safe, comfortable, well-fed and happy. You stay for at least a week at a time: usually many weeks at a time. You are a cook, housekeeper and companion. You will also give as much personal care as they need. 3. How much do I earn?
Your earnings depend on the work you will have to do. We treat each client separately and will tell you the recommended fee before you start work. 4. Will you guarantee me a level of earnings ?
Yes. We know that a good care assistant will be popular with her clients. You must decide your pattern of work and our guarantee will depend on this. Over a year, you may earn £12,000 with free board and lodging. Christies Care Ltd - Care Assistant FAQs 5. What experience do I need ? We always have clients who want a mature lady care assistant who is a competent home-keeper and companion. Ideally, she can drive. Most of our clients have quite severe problems and the successful care assistant is experienced and skilled in personal care, including continence management and the abilitiy to look after the effects of severe physical or mental disabilities. All our care assistants must be able to make meals, clean the house, do the washing and ironing, shopping and general household management tasks to make certain that the client is safe and well over the weeks you will be staying with your client.
We must be confident that you will be a success. You will have to show us at your interview and during training that you have the right mental attitude and experience to be a good care assistant. 6. How old must I be ?
We have very few care assistants under 21 years old and very few care assistants over 65 years old. Your experience and attitude is, however, more important than your age. 7. What training do you give ? We give all new care assistants their four day residential training course in Saxmundham, next to our head office, It covers the full induction and general; care assistant training, as well as a specific course in the skills required for food hygiene, administration of medication, safer people handling and continence management. The Care Standards Act 2000 sets out the minimum training new care assistants must have before they can start work for us. We do more than this minimum with a mixture of distance learning and our intensive four day course. We think it is very important to have this residential course. Our management team can get to meet and know care assistants. In four days of training we find out a lot about them. You find out about us too! You will get a strong feeling of our commitment to qualify for both care assistants and clients.
We also have other courses for care assistants who need special skills to look after clients who themselves have special needs. 8. Can I get experience before I start ? We like to offer all new care assistants three or four days of practical care training before they start work on their own. You will go to live in with a client and work for that client, under the supervision of the resident experienced care assistant. This will give you confidence and added competence. After this training, you may stay with that client, now on your own, or you may go to another client.
9. Do I need to be able to drive ? It is very useful to us if you can drive, especially if you are over 25 with a clean licence, but it is not vital. Where else can you work regularly, and take 16 weeks holiday a year ! You have your own enterprise, which keeps you for six months a year. Come to us for the rest. You are spending two years on your travels and need to work for a year overall to pay for it. So long as you know your 'holiday periods', you can work around your holiday. We do ask though that you commit for at least 12 weeks. We have student care assistants who come to us during the holidays, completing 12 - 15 weeks of work over a year, we have other care assistants who will be working for a few months only.
