Nearly one-third of our clients are "younger" mostly with physical disabilities arising from accidents or conditions such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and Huntingdon's Disease. Many don't need 'care' and prefer a PA or care assistant.
Most want an active life and a care assistant who is their sort of age. Some need drivers, some want total personal care including bladder and bowel management, peg-feeding and the use of ventilation equipment.
Financially, most are helped by their Local Authority and the Independent Living Fund or accident compensation trusts. Some manage their own financial affairs: others delegate it.
Lisa has a spinal injury following an accident. She returned to her own home in 1996 and has had Christies Care Assistants to support her ever since that date. She is very much in control of her own life and would like her care assistants to fit in with her lifestyle as much as possible. She enjoys a social life and prefers the outgoing type of care assistant who is a companion to her.
Roland is a 25 year old man with paralysis resulting from a diving accident. He needs total personal care including bowel and bladder management. He has lots of friends, and his bungalow is full of life and probably quite untidy!
Tina is 30 and has Friedrich's Ataxia. She has limited use of one arm but OK with the other. She lives in a purpose built bungalow and uses an electric wheelchair. She gets very tired and depressed. Her family visit frequently with their children.
Arthur is 30, has cerebral palsy and had been in residential care for many years. He can speak normally and communicate his wishes and needs, but has physical difficulties. He is able to take care of his own finances with administrative help. His food needs cutting up and care is needed with hot drinks. He has his own one bedroomed flat, which is well equipped with hoists over bed and bath, electric door, etc. His PA sleeps on sofa bed in lounge. He has male care assistants.
Kirsty has Muscular Dystrophy and as a result needs a lot of personal care. She is a very independent person who intends to lead as normal a life as possible. A busy and demanding position but an enjoyable one. She has her own car for her PA to take her to work etc. Her PA must be a driver.
