Jobs and Careers FAQs

We have a long history of working closely with our care assistants to ensure that they are fully supported when working with clients. We have pulled together some frequently asked questions for our care assistants.

What is live-in care work and how old do I have to be?
Live-in care is rewarding and valuable work.

You will live with your client in their home making sure they are clean and warm, safe, comfortable, well fed and happy. Your tasks will include companionship, cooking, housekeeping and personal care including washing and dressing.

We do not have any specified age restrictions although we have very few care assistants under the age of 21 and over the age of 65. We feel that experience and attitude is more important than age.

Will I have lots of clients?
Live-in care is round the clock, seven days a week.

Our aim is to introduce you to a small number of clients, so that you and they can decide which ones are right for you.

However, we do take the individual wishes of the care assistant into account. If you prefer to remain with one particular client, or you wish to travel across the UK sharing your expertise with many clients, we will support you

How much will I earn?
How much will I earn? When we asses our clients, we tell them the suggested fee thier care assistant might charge. This depends on the individual needs of your client. You will always be told the suggested fee before you start work.

Over a year, you may earn £12,000 with weekly fees likely to be between £400 and £500.

You will receive free board and lodging with your client, and in most cases you will be repaid your UK travel costs.

What experience is needed?

Although we offer a comprehensive training programme before you start, we do ask our care assistants to be competent in housekeeping and as a companion. You will be asked to undertake household chores as part of your daily routine, so you should be able to cook and clean.

Do I need to have a driving licence?
It is useful to have a valid driving licence, but it is not essential. Many of our care assistants work successfully without the ability to drive.

However if you have a licence, it must be valid and without any driving convictions, and for those care assistants coming from overseas you must have an international driving licence.

What training will I receive?
All of our care assistants undertake a five day training course covering topics which include medication, nutrition, dementia awareness, manual handling/how to use hoists, continence management, pressure care and disability awareness.

To complete the training course you will need to pass some tests on the subjects that you have been taught.

We also offer advanced courses in a range of topics including Alzheimer’s and Dementia training, physical disabilities and learning disabilities.

For further details about our training programmes, visit the training section on the ‘Why Choose Christies Care’ tab of this website.

Are there any legal requirements?
If you are applying to work for Christies Care you must be legally entitled to work in the UK.

Care assistants from the commonwealth – all those aged 31 or over might be able to get a working visa if they can prove British ancestry (a parent or grandparent born in the British Isles).

Care assistants from the EU – if you are a citizen of the EU you are allowed to come and work for us here in the UK.  Citizens of Romania and Bulgaria have restricted rights:  they may only do self-employed work.

Care assistants from other countries - In practice it can be very difficult for you to obtain a visa to work in the UK.  Even if you have a visa / work permit for another country inside the EU, this gives you no rights to work inside the UK.  If you have British Ancestry in the UK  i.e. a parent or grandparent born there, then it may be possible for you to obtain an ancestral visa, but you must go to your local British Embassy first before you apply to find this out.

I’m from overseas – can you help?
Many of our care assistants are from overseas who work with us whilst travelling to the UK.

Please note – we do not pay your travel costs to or from the UK.

We guarantee free accommodation for our care assistants while they are working. Although you will be required to have an initial base in the UK prior to your start date whilst we find you suitable work, we do guarantee free accommodation if you find yourself without work through no fault of your own.

After your initial interview and induction training, we will find you work with a suitable client as quickly as possible.

You will be paid weekly – either through a cheque or through bank payments.

What is the interview process?
If you are looking to work for Christies Care as a care assistant, we ask that you complete a pre-application form which can be accessed here.

Once we have received your application, you will be invited to our head office for a formal interview. If you are based overseas or live a long way from the office, this interview will take place via telephone.

If you are based in New Zealand, Australia or South Africa, please get in touch with one of our local agents who will process your application and give you any help or advice. Your local agents can be contacted here.

The interview process is designed to see if you are a suitable Christies Care care assistant. We will discuss with you your motivation, experience and skills. It also offers you the chance to ask us any questions you may have so you can be confident we are the right employer for you.

Please note, we do check references and you must tell us if you have any previous criminal convictions.
