Nowadays almost everyone has a smart phone or tablet. We highly recommend all our live-in carers have at least one or a laptop. Why? Apps!
Whether for fun, travel or accommodation there are many apps that can make our carer’s lives just a little bit easier.
Here’s my list of the top apps for our live-in carers.
Christies Carer’s Portals and Extranet ( available on all devices £free )
While technically not an app, your portal is extremely important. It’s the place we send your payslips, booking confirmations, care plans and more. And the extranet has documents, videos, newsletters, important announcements and much more.
When you’re induction training is confirmed, perhaps you feel the need to improve your English. Duolingo is a clever app where you can start learning Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian or English in a fun and easy way. It’s available in many languages with more added all the time.
Like many flight comparison apps, Skyscanner will help you find out which airline is cheapest on set dates on a particular route. But where Skyscanner is at its most impressive is if you’re flexible. A monthly bar chart shows you on which days it is cheapest to fly.
Insert your origin and destination into the app and it will tell you the different ways to get between the locations. Unlike Google Maps, Rome2rio will mix modes of transport to find you the best routes, such as taking a train or bus to another city before boarding a flight. The other great thing about this app is it gives you a more realistic account of the time required to fly. The app adds the time to transfer from the city to the airport and the required check-in time to your total flight time. This allows you to make a fair comparison with bus and train durations.
Your clients can be anywhere in the UK so you’ll want to know where everything is! AroundMe identifies your GPS position and will help you discover the nearest bank, bar, petrol station station, hospital, hotel, movie theatre, restaurant, supermarket, theatre and taxi.
Discover the beauty of Britain’s countryside from the comfort of your phone, highlighting many of the must-see places. From coastlines to countryside and everything in-between. You can search by postcode or location and browse the interactive “favourites” list with hi-res images.
With all the travelling you do, actual books can be very weighty. In addition to iBooks, Kindle, etc. you can borrow eBooks, audiobooks, and streaming video from the library using OverDrive. A valid account with a participating library is required.
This app includes the latest first aid advice and protocols for dealing with emergency situations. It is simple to follow with illustrated guides and voiced instructions. As a supplement to our specifically-designed first aid course, it will help you to know what to do in situations when basic knowledge of first aid can make the difference.
You’ve worked hard all day and now you deserve a good night’s sleep. This is a very popular sleep aid app. Drift off to any of this app’s 50 sounds. Perfect for just relaxation and de-stressing too. Just remember to wake up!

Want to be a Christies Carer?
We’re extremely proud of the excellent standard of care our carers give to their clients.
This is a result of our rigorous application and selection process and the free, award-winning training our carers undertake, both as new carers to be and when they return yearly for their update training.
We offer the longest and most comprehensive training in the UK live-in care sector and are constantly improving and updating so our carers are fully prepared and capable of facing the challenges of being a live-in carer.
This is reflected in our attainment of both the Princess Royal Training Ward 2017 and an Outstanding rating from the CQC.
