Carers Going the Extra Mile

Table of Contents

Our carers are constantly surprising us with the lengths to which they go to make things special for their clients. Below are just two of the many examples of this.

Christies Carer Arranges Reunion

Christies Carer, Beatrice M, recently arranged a trip to Scotland for her client to re-unite with an old friend after 36 years.

Her client, Karen, had first met Stella when she started visiting Karen and her mother on Sundays, when her local Church group would visit lonely people in the parish.

Karen’s mother and Stella became best friends and she used to take Christmas presents each year for Karen and her mum.

Although Karen’s mum passed away in 1984, and despite the fact that they hadn’t seen each other since Stella moved to Scotland in 1982, Stella and Karen have stayed in touch all this time, exchanging Christmas and Birthday gifts every year via post.

Beatrice and Karen had a fantastic trip. In addition to meeting up with Stella and her family, they discovered Edinburgh on an open-topped double-decker ‘hop on hop off’ bus whilst there.

The Queen’s Newest Soldier

Christies Carer, James McGowan, describes a recent caring experience and how he went the extra mile to make his client’s day. In his own words:

“I have to say that this week with Robert and Mark has been the most enjoyable in all the years of my caring career thus far.

All they need is love! It has been like having two sons (albeit around my age) under my wing and just being there for them. Laughter all week long and not one bit of drama at all.

Today Mark went off to work as usual – ‘Keen as Mustard’, as they say, to get there and please everyone. He is happy. He loves what he does and feels valued too. Mark loves his football (Crystal Palace) and is always chanting and smiling and having a great time.

With Mark out this morning, that left Robert with me alone today. I picked up from him watching a film about soldiers last night, that he likes soldiers and all the things that go with them: uniforms, tanks, rockets, armoured vehicles, etc. He also has this lovely thought that the soldiers are all good and brave and will protect the Queen, and him too.

So, this morning, I took Robert to the local Artillery Barracks in Grove Park which was a bus ride away. When we arrived I introduced myself to the Regimental Sergeant Major, only to find a Captain from my old regiment, the First Battalion Irish Guards, being in charge of the unit there.

After I explained who I was, that I represent Christies Care, who I was looking after and why we were there, we were invited in.

The photos show we had a fabulous time, in the capable hands of Sergeant Enrique ‘Cas’ Castro – the head of Recruiting 106 (Royal Yeomanry) Regiment Royal Artillery. To say that I had tears in my eyes would be an understatement. These pictures paint a thousand and more words!

I have written to the Regiment thanking them for such a wonderful time and for making Robert’s day. The Unit has an open day in May and they have asked that Robert please go to it if possible – so much did they enjoy Robert’s visit with them this morning. That would be up to the carer at the time, but a worthy trip for Robert’s sake if nothing else.

After the visit we went to a local coffee shop and spoke about the experience. He identified with lots of what went on and what he experienced.

Robert is now busy sat back home with about ten magazines and brochures that the lads at the unit gave to him this morning. This afternoon Robert will be creating a ‘Thank You’ card at an Arts and Crafts session for Sergeant ‘Cas’. I will make sure that he gets it.

Love to all at Christie’s from

James, Robert, and Mark.

Well done Beatrice and James. If you’ve gone the extra mile for your client we’d love to know. And give you the praise you deserve!
