Your posture affects your health, more than most people know. Poor posture can restrict your heart and lungs, affect your bowels and digestion, and cause chronic pain. This leads to not only pain and discomfort, but can also be a major contributing factor towards premature death. Someone whose lungs are constricted by body shape changes and poor posture, is going to find their lung function restricted, he or she is more likely to get pneumonia or other lung diseases or infections.
And the problem is, is that a very changed body shape is difficult to change back. Somebody who has a very distorted body shape and is constricted is unlikely to be able to walk upright again. However, what can be done, relatively simply, is to prevent further negative changes to posture.
So in September, Christies Care’s training team had training from Simple Stuff Works’ Tess Ellis, a physiotherapist who specialises in posture and is evangelical about preventing the pain and suffering that poor posture generates.
The team learned:
- How the shape of the body is expressed in the hips, pelvis and spine, and the effects on these joints of posture
- How posture affects the body in general and internal organs
- The impacts of body shape changes on quality of life
- How to find if someone is in pain, if that person can’t communicate verbally
- How to reduce the chance of further body shape changes, including how to overcome barriers
The last part of the training course was a process of planning how to integrate the training, how to roll out our knowledge so that our carers can help prevent further body shape changes for our clients.
“With this course, we can reduce the number of people dying due to their body shape changes.”
“A fantastic course!”
