Although it’s still technically Summer, you wouldn’t know it to look outside!

And with temperatures starting to drop, older people are being urged to shop around for cheaper gas and electricity after a report showed customers were paying too much for their energy bills. The report from the Competition and Markets Authority revealed that millions of energy customers have been paying too much.

Around 70 per cent of customers were also shown to currently be on their energy provider’s ‘default’, and generally more expensive, standard variable tariff, despite having the option to switch to a new provider or fixed-rate tariff which could save them money.

It’s especially important now as a number of popular fixed-rate tariffs are set to expire on September 30th.

What can you do?

The internet has countless websites offering to find you the best deal. A good place to start is with:

  • Money Saving Expert is one of the best resources online for saving money on energy bills (and much more);
  • The Home Heat Helpline a free and independent (although it is Funded by the Big Six suppliers) advice service, is urging people to find out what help they can claim in order to stay warm this winter and advice on free or discounted home insulation and discounts and rebate schemes;
  • Age UK has got together with E.On to supply a Fixed 2 Year tariff. The tailor-made gas and electricity package is exclusively for people aged 60 and over;
  • Which? Switch provides an impartial way to compare energy tariffs and find the best gas and electricity provider for your needs.

If you’re not internet-savvy then ask a family member, neighbour, carer or friend who is if they can spare a little time to potentially save you a lot of money this winter!
