In December, we brought you an article about a survey published by www.stayinmyhome.co.uk which found that over two million people in Britain say they know an elderly person who had to have their cat and/or dog put to sleep because they were moving into a residential care home.

Peter Seldon and Dame Esther Rantzen

Recently this topic has featured heavily on numerous regional and national radio shows across the UK. Our audio clip features Dame Esther Rantzen DBE and Peter Seldon sharing their thoughts on older people, pets and the option of live-in homecare.

Dame Esther, founder of The Silverline (a helpline for older people), whose mother was able to stay in her own flat due to live-in care:

“Live-in home care is what it sounds like.

It’s having someone living in your home and looking after you and there are a lot of different companies that will offer that kind of help and support and it gives companionship, it gives physical and mental support and it’s not as expensive as people think, compared with living in a residential home.”

Peter Seldon both of whose parents benefitted from live-in home care:

“… when my father got to the age of 84 it became apparent that he was beginning to develop signs of early onset dementia. It was clear that we would need to find a solution for him. My brothers and I did some research and we discovered the option to have a full time live in carer in the house.”

Live-in Home Care Hub

The Live-in Homecare Information Hub website is designed to be a vital information resource to families interested in live-in homecare, where a personal carer lives in, 24 hours a day. Many carers and nurses are specially trained to cope with particular conditions such as dementia, Parkinson’s, stroke and MS, or to provide palliative care. Live-in care at home offers them a real alternative. With no rigid rules or timetables, each day is planned around the person or couple, giving a sense of independence and dignity for them and total peace of mind for their family.
